Born in 1969, Nesto Kanyonganise is a Zimbabwean sculptor whose artistic journey spans more than three decades. After completing his O Levels in 1987, he began sculpting in 1988, inspired by the vibrant community of local artists around him. Together, they formed Gota Rechisuma at Silvera House, a Catholic Skills Development Centre dedicated to empowering young people, alleviating poverty, and giving voice to shared social struggles through art.
Kanyonganise’s career quickly expanded beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. In 1991, he participated in a cultural exchange programme in Dar es Salaam, where he and fellow artists taught Makonde woodcarvers the techniques of stone sculpture in the aftermath of a devastating flood. In return, he learned the intricate craft of batik wax printing — a skill that broadened his creative vocabulary and deepened his appreciation for cross-cultural artistic dialogue.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including shows in Italy (2001), Germany, and Mina Gallery in San Francisco, among others. His artistic influence also extends into education: he taught art at APC Tsumeb in Namibia, sharing his knowledge with emerging artists and contributing to the region’s creative development.
Today, Nesto Kanyonganise continues to sculpt, teach, and mentor youth and women in his community. His practice remains rooted in cultural exchange, social upliftment, and the belief that art is both a personal expression and a communal bridge. He looks forward to new opportunities to share his work and expand his impact.
